MODEL • INTERVIEW
From a childhood dream of magazine covers to catwalks, commercial work and freelance modeling, Kath Mc Donnell brings classic glamour, determination and a love of storytelling to every collaboration.
Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you started your modeling career?
A: Yes absolutely my name is Kath Mc Donnell I always knew from the age of 9 I wanted to be a model. I use to read fashion magazines and would picture myself on the front cover. When I was 17 I went to a modelling casting and was informed I should enter Miss Northern Ireland competition. I entered the competition and came 7th in it.
This was my first opportunity to model on the catwalk and I loved every second of it . From then I entered various other competitions which led to commercial Tv which I also enjoyed advertising facial care creams. It’s funny really nothing would stop me pursing my dream as a young mum. The other models were getting make up ready , I was expressing breast milk to dispose of in the ladies toilets . So yes I’m truly dedicated lol.

Q: What inspired you to become a model?
A: I would have to say Kate Moss she was my idol growing up. I always wanted my picture taken loved the camera.
Q: Was there a defining moment that made you realize modeling was your true passion?
A: Absolutely I put modelling on the back burner to get married and start my family. The local primary school was raising much needed funds and hosted a modelling show. I was asked to model and arrived early to see the teachers struggling to walk the catwalk . I stepped in and gave them a few lessons in catwalk walking and posing , they were truly grateful and all commented I was made to walk on the catwalk.
**Industry Experience & Challenges**
Q: What has been the most exciting or memorable shoot you’ve worked on?
A: So far it would have to be The Face of Ireland as we made an appearance on a RTE day time show it was an amazing experience and a great team to work with.
Q: Have you faced any challenges in the modeling industry?
A: If so, how did you overcome them? There is no model I know who hasn’t faced challenges . My advise to anyone starting out keep going and rejection is protection it’s not the end. I have been rejected for being too tall and I know it’s no reflection of me it’s just the Industry. To overcome this I made myself visible and built connections with photographers to show model agencies just how much I’m prepared to work for it.
Rejection is protection
-it's not the end.
