PERSONAL & CAREER JOURNEY

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you started your modeling career?

My name is Amelia and I’ve been a dancer since the age of 3 and a cellist since age 6 so I’ve always loved performing on stage!

About 18 months ago I saw an advertisement for auditions to walk in a tween fashion show at New York Fashion Week. I replied to the ad, and got cast!

2. What inspired you to become a model?

I have always loved fashion! As a younger kid I liked to try to design my own outfits and I even made my 10th birthday outfit during a fashion camp I attended. I love binge watching re-runs of America’s Next Top Model and current episodes of Project Runway. I enjoy designing clothes because I can’t wait to wear my designs, and having the opportunity to wear other designers’ creations is so fun. I get to play dress up every time!

I stay
motivated by
setting goals, and once I achieve that goal, I set a new, higher one so that I am always progressing.

3. Was there a defining moment that made you realize modeling was your true passion?

It was when I watched the video of my first time walking on the NYFW runway. My mom had recorded my walk, and when I saw myself up there, I knew that this is where I belong.

5. Have you faced any challenges in the modeling industry? If so, how did you overcome them?

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE & CHALLENGES

4. What has been the most exciting or memorable shoot you’ve worked on?

My most memorable shoot was modeling Quinceanera dresses for a designer named Rocio Contreras. I loved being in a big ball gown, which made me feel like a princess and truly made me feel like I was shining in the dress. The photos from that shoot were amazing and when I posted them to my Instagram account, they gained nearly 20,000 views!

The biggest challenge I’ve faced so far is actually being in this “tween” stage. Although I started at age 11, I was really too tall to model in the kids fashion lines, but too young to model in the teen and adult fashion lines, so it was very difficult finding a space to showcase my skills and continue developing them.

I had to look very hard to find fashion shows that allowed for tween models and were not just looking to gain extra money from me and other models in my similar situation. There are a lot of money-grab shows out there, so you have to be really careful in selecting amongst the limited number of shows where tween models are accepted.

11. How do you stay motivated and continue growing as a model?

I stay motivated by setting goals, and once I achieve that goal, I set a new, higher one so that I am always progressing.

FUTURE GOALS & ADVICE

12. What are your biggest career goals for the future?

My biggest career goal for the future is to model at New York Fashion Week for a top fashion house, and to shoot a commercial or brand campaign for a luxury brand.

13. Do you have any dream collaborations or brands you'd love to work with?

I’d love to do a brand campaign with Zendaya, and also wear a Chanel gown down the red carpet at a gala event.

14. What advice would you give to aspiring models looking to break into the industry?

I still am one!! (ha ha), so the advice I give to myself and to others like me is to keep doing what you love and always try your best to give it 110%.

Grace in Every Step

From a love of dance and music to life on the runway, Amelia is a rising model with a big vision. In this exclusive interview, she shares her journey, inspirations, challenges, and dreams for the future.

6. How do you prepare for a big shoot or runway show?

For runway shows, I practice a lot in my house strutting up and down the hallways and in front of mirrors to improve my walk and poses. I gather up all of my different shoes and basic clothing like leggings and bandeau tops in case they might be needed, as well as a warm fuzzy robe because backstage is usually very cold!! For photo shoots, I look to see some of the current trends in posing that models are using these days and try them out at home to see which ones I like for myself. I also focus extra hard on my skin care to make sure my skin is very smooth and clear of any blemishes.

CREATIVE PROCESS & STYLE

7. How would you describe your modeling style?

My modeling style is simple and elegant... more of a beauty focus. On the runway I’m more of a catwalker than a horsewalker, and I generally like classic fashions with a little bit of a modern, funky twist.

8. Do you prefer editorial, commercial, or runway modeling, and why?

I’d like to get more into commercial modeling, and even things like brand campaigns, e-commerce, and influencer modeling to broaden my reach and my brand recognition on a larger scale, as well as sustain a living financially as a successful model.

9. What role do you think storytelling plays in modeling?

Storytelling is very important in editorial campaigns, but it’s also important in many other styles of modeling because your ability to tell stories through your images helps build a connection with your audience or with shoppers who might be looking to buy the brand that you’re advertising.

INFLUENCES & INSPIRATIONS

10. Are there any models, photographers, or designers who have inspired you?

I love Naomi Campbell’s walk… It’s fierce! There are also a few designers and fashion houses that I really like, including Chanel, Gucci, Christian Dior, and Christian Siriano.
